Calculate Readout Noise

The Calculate Readout Noise command measures the readout noise of the camera. The readout noise is the base level of noise produced by the camera system. It is equivalent to the noise in a 0 length exposure. The results are reported in the input units of electrons, or "e-".

To make this measurement requires 2 bias frames. Best results are obtained if the bias frames are taken sequentially.

Procedure

To make the measurement requires opening (displaying) 2 bias frames. These may be opened in separate window or as (part of) an image set. The images are selected using the 2 image tree boxes shown in the dialog above.

  1. Open 2 biases and 2 flat field frames.

  2. Click the Measure > Diagnostics > Calculate Readout Noise command to open the dialog.

  3. Using the 2 Image Tree controls, select the 2 bias frames from among the open images.

  4. Using the Use Cursor ROI option, choose whether to use the entire image for making the measurement or to limit the measurement to a region of "good" pixels.

  5. Click .
